Why Buddy
We would rather be
boring and true.
There is a particular kind of copywriting that has taken over travel gear. Everything is premium. Everything is engineered. Everything is waterproof right up until the moment it rains.
01 · The thing we noticed
The expensive brands tell you less than the cheap ones.
We went through the product pages of the best-known travel brands in the world — the ones charging a hundred and ten dollars for six packing cubes — and wrote down every material specification they published.
The list was short. "Polyester." Sometimes "recycled polyester." No denier rating, which is the single number that tells you how tough a fabric is. No zipper manufacturer, which is the single most common point of failure in any bag ever made. Frequently no weight.
Meanwhile a twenty-dollar set on a marketplace will happily tell you it is "waterproof", "premium", "durable" and "high-quality nylon" — four claims, zero numbers.
What we publish, always
| Denier | The fabric's toughness, as a number. Higher is heavier and harder to tear. |
|---|---|
| Zipper | Brand and gauge. YKK® #5 and #8, because the zipper is what fails first. |
| Weight | In ounces and grams, for the piece you are actually buying. |
| Dimensions | Inches and centimetres, external, not "roomy". |
| Water | Water-resistant. Never "waterproof", because it is not. |
02 · The honest bit about honesty
Where a bag at this price actually fails
Read enough one-star reviews of budget packing organisers and the same five failures come up, in the same order, every time. We know because we read them, in bulk, before we drew anything.
- The zipper. Unbranded coil, no reinforcement at the turns. It snags, then it separates, and on the worst ones it tears the fabric it is sewn to.
- The seams. Loose stitch density and no bar-tacking where the handles anchor. Handles are the first thing to leave.
- The fabric. Thin, unrated polyester that frays at the cut edges within a trip or two.
- The shape. Cheap cubes bulge in the middle when full, which defeats the entire purpose of a cube.
- The waterproofing claim. Polyester repels a splash. It is not waterproof, and selling it as waterproof is how a wet swimsuit ends up in with your shirts.
So: YKK® zippers, bar-tacks at every anchor, a stated 600D recycled ripstop, a stiffened base panel to stop the bulge, and the word "water-resistant" written plainly on every page. Five failures, five answers. That is the entire product brief.
What we are not going to pretend
We are a new brand. We do not have a decade of field testing behind us, we do not have a bluesign® certification, and we are not going to invent an origin story about a founder's transformative gap year.
What we have is a spec sheet we will publish, a 5-year warranty on soft goods when the industry standard is two, and 100 days for you to take it somewhere real and find out whether we were telling the truth. If we were not, you send it back and we refund it. That is the whole deal.
On sustainability, without the halo
The shells are recycled RPET, which is a genuine improvement over virgin polyester and is also, to be clear, still plastic. The most sustainable thing about a bag is that you only buy it once, which is why the warranty is five years and why we would rather sell you one good set than three bad ones. We are not going to put a leaf icon on it and call ourselves a climate company.
